Glow Worms and Natural Spa

After a early start we headed to the Blackwater Rafting Centre, to start our Labyrinth Odyssey trip.  This was essentially a rafting (in a rubber ring tube) through some underground caves that were 35 - 50 metres below it pitch black darkness with just head torches - hence the name black water.  Anyway after seeing the promotional video, Claire had a change of heart (freaked out!!!) admittedly hoping they had some sort of lights and open space down there (Claire's words!) . So we decided to undertake the much easier Glow Worm Caving tour - turned out she made the right choice as she really didn't like this walk underground either!  But the amazing glow worms looking like the night sky acted as a distraction.   It was a very good tour although a little pricey for what it was - essentially it was 30 min walking then a ten minute boat ride in the dark.  The glow worms were quite impressive, unfortunately no photos were allowed in the the tunnels and due to the number of tourists you felt a little rushed and hemmed it - which didn't help Claire!  But worth seeing as it was one North Island's most notable attractions.

It was a 2 hour drive to Rotoura, in the fab Toyota Yaris.

Then to help destress Claire (and my nerves from Claire's driving - joke!) we headed to the Polynesian spa. Rotorua is famous for the thermal springs, due to it's Volcanic activity, it also sends off  some lovely pungent odours, like rotten eggs.  Although some free springs can be found at locations on the outskirts of town, some of these spots are difficult to find and also known to be a little unsafe for cars, and of course those in town have long been since turned into 'spas' thanks to the enterprising individuals.  The Polynesian is one of the oldest and original spas, although it has been refurched on numerous occasions, a basic package sets you back $27 and allows unlimited access to 7 pools, although a little pricey, it is certainly an experience to remember, just don't forget to have a cold shower between each pool and avoid staying in the 42C pool for too long!!!
